Domestic violence occurs in every neighborhood and has devastating effects on individuals,
families, and communities. Too often, victims are forced to endure the abuse alone and are
isolated from places they could possibly turn to for safety and support. Because of the unique
relationship that exists between salon professionals and clients, salon professionals can often
spot signs of physical abuse that others may never see. They have the opportunity to play a key
role in assisting victims of domestic violence by being educated through a program called CUT
IT OUT.
CUT IT OUT is a national program of the Salons Against Domestic Abuse Fund that builds
awareness of domestic violence and educates salon professionals on how to recognize warning
signs, respond appropriately, and safely refer clients to resources that can help them. The
program is sponsored by, The National Cosmetology Association, and Southern Living At
HOME.
Since the program was launched in 2003, over 20,000 salon professionals and cosmetology
students across the country have attended CUT IT OUT educational seminars. The program has
been very successful, and the response from the salon community has been overwhelmingly
positive. The program has won several awards for excellence and has also received extensive
national media coverage, including CBS The Early Show, ABC 20/20, Newsweek, The New York
Times, and many other news outlets.
As a facilitator for CUT IT OUT, I am interested in talking with you about the program and
discussing the possibility of conducting educational seminars at your [SCHOOL/SALON ]. Each
one-hour seminar provides each participant with excellent informational materials, awareness
materials, and a Certificate of Attendance. At the end of the seminar, each participant will
understand the impact that domestic violence can have on their business and the lives of their
client base, as well as why domestic violence is their “business”.
